THE COURSE OUTLINE
Each module connects a concept to a practical task. Open a module to see its topics and exercise.
Claude can help brainstorm several approaches before a person chooses one, or draft a deliverable after the requirements are settled. These are different tasks. Riverstone Learning's coordinator should not receive an exploratory idea as if it were an approved plan. Label speculative options and factual statements differently from the first prompt. A brief should name the reader, decision and evidence available. A one-page staff memo differs from a promotional announcement even when both concern the same course. Write the output's purpose and three acceptance checks before using Claude. These checks become a shared standard for comparing responses and explaining revisions. A model cannot know Riverstone Learning's unpublished prices or staffing decisions unless the learner supplies them. Set a source boundary and require missing information to be visible. Keep generated work as a draft until reviewed. This protects the exercise from plausible invented business details without requiring any special account feature.
Compare a vague prompt with a clearly specified task.
Help me plan a one-page brief for a fictional business. First identify the audience, decision and information missing from my task description.
Check whether the questions address real gaps rather than adding unnecessary complexity.
Put task, audience, source facts, constraints and output format in separate sections. This makes the brief easier for both Claude and a reviewer to inspect. Learners should explain why each section matters, rather than memorise a magic prompt formula. A well-structured brief still needs accurate input and independent checking. A short example shows the shape of a reply or table more effectively than several vague adjectives. Identify whether the example supplies style, schema or factual content. Riverstone Learning's example reply can teach courteous wording without granting the assistant permission to reuse a different learner's name or an unrelated refund promise. Asking questions is valuable when a missing fact prevents a correct answer. It is wasteful when the task already supplies enough material for a useful bounded draft. Teach a distinction between blocking gaps, such as an unknown requested fee, and nonblocking choices, such as greeting style, which can follow the provided template.
Create a reusable prompt for a professional email or document.
Draft a customer response using these product facts and the example tone. Keep it under 150 words and leave out claims that the facts do not support.
Compare two prompt versions for accuracy, tone and compliance with the requested format.
A document-analysis request works best when it asks specific questions and demands supporting excerpts. Broad summaries may miss exceptions that matter to a decision. Label each Riverstone Learning policy section, then ask which rule applies to a given scenario. The learner checks that the excerpt supports the conclusion, not merely shares keywords. A policy can contain both a general rule and a narrower exception. Extract them separately before applying either. If a clause is ambiguous, preserve its wording and ask an authorised person to clarify. Claude's plausible interpretation should not be treated as a newly adopted business policy or communicated as certain. A summary of supplied pages is a summary of those pages, not proof about omitted sections. Record what was provided and any missing appendices. When a request depends on unavailable information, state the limitation explicitly. This helps learners avoid describing partial extracts as a complete contract, policy or operational manual.
Build a checked summary and action list from a sample document.
Summarise this sample policy into Rule, Who it applies to and Supporting excerpt. Separate unclear points from confirmed rules.
Verify the excerpts and flag a deliberately ambiguous clause without inventing an interpretation.
A project groups related work and can hold reference material and instructions where the account supports it. The underlying method is a maintained source pack with stable rules. Use a labelled text document and paste it into a conversation when Projects is unavailable. Learners should understand context design independently of interface layout. Putting several documents together does not establish which one is current. Label versions, dates and the authority for superseding older facts. Riverstone Learning's coordinator may retire an old course schedule only after confirming the replacement. Stale references should be removed or clearly marked so a future draft does not revive an obsolete time. An instruction like 'always be accurate' cannot repair contradictory documents. Write specific rules for source preference, missing facts and review responsibilities, then maintain the actual reference material. This makes a project useful over time. Keep fictional class data in training and exclude credentials, private messages and unnecessary personal information from context.
Set up a sample project for a fictional small business.
For this fictional project, use the supplied reference documents when answering. Identify the source of each product fact and ask if a required fact is missing.
Test project instructions with an incomplete source pack and check how missing information is handled.
An artifact is useful when its purpose and expected behaviour are clear. For a checklist, define what completion means and which states must appear. Start with a text or standalone HTML deliverable that learners can inspect. Claude's artifact interface and execution settings vary; no cloud execution or paid feature is required for the core exercise. A checklist may look correct while its counter fails to update or its labels are inaccessible. Test interactions directly and inspect the underlying text or code where appropriate. For Riverstone Learning's class-readiness checklist, a learner should mark items in different orders and verify that the remaining count matches the unchecked items. A revision should name the broken criterion and avoid unrelated redesign. Save a working copy before asking for changes, then rerun earlier checks. This teaches learners to distinguish a requested correction from a wholesale regeneration that may introduce new faults. Record unsupported or unavailable interface behaviour honestly rather than claiming it worked.
Develop an artifact that supports your chosen workflow.
Create a small checklist artifact for this sample process. Include the agreed steps and a completion state. Explain which behaviour I should test.
Test the artifact yourself, then request a focused correction against the original acceptance criteria.
A reusable Claude routine needs a checkable source pack, a template and evidence from multiple cases. Save the actual outputs, including failures. Riverstone Learning's enquiry assistant should be evaluated on supported questions, missing prices and conflicting schedules. A polished successful example alone cannot establish that the routine handles everyday variation. Accuracy, completeness and format are separate criteria. Count whether each supported enquiry question was answered, whether any unprovided claim appeared and whether requested headings were used. This avoids a vague quality score that hides important faults. Verification should examine the source facts directly, not just ask Claude to approve its own answer. Define who maintains the references, who reviews drafts and which gaps stop a reply. Add a manual fallback and a short incident note when a wrong fact is found. A reusable routine is a small operating process, not just a saved prompt. Core labs keep all messages as drafts and use fictional input.
Present a complete workflow with a before-and-after comparison.
Run this reusable briefing prompt against a new sample input. Return the brief and list any source gaps that still need a person to resolve.
Compare three runs with the same checklist and document which revisions improve the result.
